Caretaker of the N.I.C.E.'s griffons, he spends more time with them than he does the institute's students. There is no better caregiver to those creatures, than Smithe, as he treats them as he would treat family, and insists all others who ride them do. He trains people to ride them, and if Sinjin catches anyone mistreating them, he will ban them from riding the griffons for life.

He find beauty in the griffons, and recognize their intelligence, unlike most other horse-riders who are used to unintelligent animals. You'll never catch him calling the griffons animals, preferring to call them magnificent creatures instead. The griffons recognize his love and reciprocate, often playing with him as they do with each other, treating him very much like one of their own.
